Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says she’s storing her eggs while she weighs her next political actions ahead of the 2028 presidential election campaign.
“This is a decision that I am making to feel more in control of my life,” Ocasio-Cortez, 36, said in her Instagram Story about her choices about her reproductive options.
The progressive Democrat from New York did not expressly indicate if she intended to have children. She stated she was taking a “political risk” in her social media posts by speaking so publicly about her possible family plans.
“I have not ruled out running for president in 2028 or for the U.S. Senate seat held by Democrats’ floor leader, Chuck Schumer of New York,” she stated Sunday on ABC’s “This Week.” She said she wanted to normalize the conversation about what women go thru in their work and personal lives, but also spotlight the policies of President Donald Trump’s administration.
“In this political climate, where this administration is denying reproductive care to women across the country, from abortion rights to ability to carry out a healthy pregnancy, I think it’s important for us as leaders to have these conversations,” she added.
Trump’s administration was anti-abortion rights and the Republican president’s first-term selections to the Supreme Court were the margin in the 2022 ruling that overturned the Roe v. Wade decision that had granted a constitutional right to end a pregnancy.
But separately, Trump in 2025 signed an executive order to reduce the expenses of in vitro fertilization.
When the party controlled the House in 2022, Ocasio-Cortez introduced a Democratic bill to enshrine abortion rights into federal law following the Supreme Court’s abortion ruling.
In her weekend statement, Ocasio-Cortez pointed to the uneven standards and scrutiny women in politics and other sectors endure over their family status.
Men run for office, or really they interview for jobs, and people aren't thinking in the back of their minds, “OK, this guy’s running for office, how old is he? “Oh, well, is he going to want to start a family?’ she said.
